AGI calls him, along with Bradbury Thompson, a pioneer in applying typography to visual communication. This description is significant because it shows that Lubalin is not only known for his beautifully designed typography, but also for changing the function of typography in design. He did not treat typography as a carrier of information, but rather as an expressive visual element. His notable achievements have also placed him in important positions in the fields of editorial and typographic design. AGI mentions his involvement in the production of magazines such as Eros and Avant Garde, and the creation and design of U&lc magazine for ITC, which was distributed globally. These projects earned him a large audience and helped him spread his ideas to different design fields. His importance is also reflected in the Herb Lubalin Centre for Design and Typography at Cooper Union College. Founded in 1985, the center still preserves his core works.

Another reason for Lubalin's profound influence lies in his support of new technologies. Avant Garde masthead to ITC Avant Garde Gothic

I believe Herb Lubalin's most important contribution to typography is developing the masthead design of Avant Garde magazine into the well-known ITC Avant Garde Gothic typeface. AGI points out that the Avant Garde masthead inspired his design of the eponymous font family. MyFonts also notes that this typeface was originally a key symbol of Avant Garde magazine in the late 1960s, and requests to convert it into a font family were repeatedly rejected before the ITC was established in 1970. He didn't design a neutral alphabet first and then apply it to a project. Instead, a unique magazine logo became the foundation for a complete font family. The Encyclopædia Britannica notes that the Avant Garde logo was developed into a typeface called Avant Garde, describing it as one of the most successful and widely used typefaces of the phototypesetting era. This is significant because it means the project was not limited to a single magazine. It was applied to a wider range of typography and became part of everyday design. In my view, a design initially intended for a specific masthead eventually evolving into a more widely used typeface family helps demonstrate that presentation fonts can be both expressive and commercially viable. It provides all designers with a great example of how a unique visual style can function in a variety of different contexts.

Furthermore, it also influenced how designers think about alternative glyphs, ligatures, and geometric presentation forms. Archives from Pioneer magazine indicate that the magazine "conceived" this typeface, describing it as one characterized by the variability of letterforms, as exemplified by its rich set of ligatures.
